At Hollinwood Academy, our vision aims to provide all children and young people with a broad, high quality and relevant physical education. Through a well-structured and progressive school curriculum we enable all children and young people to develop and challenge their knowledge, skill and understanding. It is essential that children and young people develop an understanding of the benefits of exercise and make connections between physical health and positive mental health with the vision that children and young people will continue to adopt a healthy lifestyle into their adult life.
PE Lessons at Hollinwood Academy
At Hollinwood Academy, we prioritise providing equal opportunities to all children and young people, ensuring a wide and varied curriculum that allows them to develop their knowledge, confidence, and self-esteem within PE. Within KS1 and KS2, our curriculum aims to develop skills through the following topics:
- Fundamental skills
- Invasion games
- Gymnastics
- Outdoor and adventurous activity
- Swimming
- Athletics
- Net and ball games
- Striking and fielding games
Our intentions in delivering PE are as follows:
Intent 1: To provide equal opportunities to all children and young people through a wide and varied curriculum, enabling them to develop their knowledge, confidence, and self-esteem within PE.
Intent 2: To motivate children and young people to fully engage in PE and promote a healthy and active lifestyle, leading to positive self-esteem and well-being. Children and young people will understand the positive impact that exercise has on our health and bodies.
Intent 3: To ensure all children and young people have access to appropriate equipment, resources, and opportunities to take part in sporting activities both in school and within their local communities.
Intent 4: To provide after-school club links and activities, including dinner time sporting activities, that offer children and young people opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities.
Intent 5: To ensure all children and young people succeed and achieve “Learning Together, Learning For All, Learning For Life”.
Intent 6: To utilise sport, exercise, yoga, and meditation as tools to positively impact children and young people’s mental health and well-being.
At Hollinwood Academy, we believe in nurturing our children and young people's physical and mental well-being through a comprehensive PE curriculum and the active involvement of our local community. By providing a range of opportunities and resources, we strive to empower our children and young people and enable them to thrive in their PE journey.
Schemes of Work
At Hollinwood Academy, we are committed to providing a high-quality PE curriculum that caters to the needs of all our children and young people. To achieve this, we have developed our own devised schemes of work in line with the 2014 National Curriculum in England.
Our primary goal is to enable all children and young people, regardless of their abilities, to develop individual skills that can be transferred to other areas of their learning throughout their lives. We also strive to foster character building, teamwork, communication, and resilience among our children and young people. Instilling an understanding of the importance of exercise and healthy eating is another key aspect of our PE curriculum.
To deliver a stimulating and interactive curriculum, we offer a diverse range of sports that allow children and young people to explore new sporting experiences within a safe environment. We encourage our children and young people to participate in sport and exercise beyond the school premises by taking part in local community events, school borough competitions, MAT tournaments, and community access programs. This not only promotes physical well-being but also benefits their overall health.
Teaching and learning at Hollinwood Academy are based on accurate assessment and a deep understanding of each children and young people’s needs. Our schemes of work are continuously adapted and reviewed to meet the needs of our children and young people. Lessons are carefully paced, incorporating both independent and shared activities using various strategies and styles, including multi-sensory and kinaesthetic approaches. We also offer a range of sporting extracurricular activities to further engage our students.
Our positive learning environment encourages children and young people to perform at their highest level and develop their skills and physical abilities. Children and young people are encouraged to reflect on their own performance as well as that of others, identifying strengths and weaknesses for improvement.
At Hollinwood Academy, we are proud of our PE curriculum, which not only provides opportunities for children and young people to excel but also promotes their overall health and well-being.

Assessment
At Hollinwood Academy, we place great importance on assessing the progress of our children and young people in PE. We believe that a comprehensive understanding of each child and young person’s abilities and development in PE is crucial for their overall growth and well-being.
To effectively assess our children and young people, we use Evidence for Learning, a digital platform that allows us to record their evidence and progress on a weekly basis through the use of photos and videos. This enables us to accurately document their achievements and monitor their ongoing performance in alignment with the specific targets outlined in the Hollinwood Academy scheme of work and the National Curriculum objectives.
To guarantee personalised support, we have designed individualised PE progress targets for each child and young person. These targets are closely monitored, and we maintain a strong partnership with parents by sharing them on a termly basis through Arbor, our digital communication platform. By doing so, we aim to provide comprehensive support and effectively track the progress of our children and young people.
Through our robust assessment system, we are dedicated to nurturing the physical development of our children and young people, providing them with the opportunities they need to flourish both academically and personally.
Technology & Websites
Children and young people's progress in PE is captured on EFL on a weekly basis using photos and videos. Evidence is shared with families and learners regularly. At Hollinwood Academy, we firmly believe in the transformative power of technology to enhance learning. Consequently, we have seamlessly integrated technology into our PE curriculum.
Wider Curriculum & Celebrations
To support learning, a broad range of extra-curricular clubs are on offer such as after school football club, daily multi-sports clubs and Powerchair football.
Sports trips are incorporated into the school calendar and Hollinwood Academy are members of the Oldham School sport partnership.
Within the school environment 1:1 interventions are implemented for targeted children and young people such as boxing, multi sports, rebound therapy and sensory diet.
New Bike Track
During the summer term, of last academic year, Mr Heap applied to the Opening School Facilities Funding. The funding is to help schools open their sports facilities outside of the school day, to both school and community users to create sustainable change in increased physical activity levels in communities where they are needed most. I am pleased to say that in September we were granted this funding application.
The first part of this project was the new bike track. This new addition to our school not only expands the opportunities for outdoor education and PE lessons but also provides our students with a safe and challenging environment to enhance their physical development and well-being. We have purchased 12 different sized balance bikes, 12 mountain bikes along with protective equipment for the children and young people. Alongside this, we have trained 15 staff members so they are balance bike trained.
Over the next few weeks, we will also be purchasing a range of adapted bikes and trikes. This will allow school to offer cycling sessions on site for after school club, holiday club and interventions. You will also see a new storage unit, for the bikes to be securely locked away and the final step is to plan a grand opening of the track when it is all complete. Well done Mr Heap and team – I can’t wait to see our children and young people access this soon.
