HWA Blog - 25.10.24

I cannot believe we are at October half term already, but it has been so nice seeing all the children and young people settled, happy and working hard.

Each half term, I give out a number of Head Teacher's Awards to worthy children and young people who have been nominated by the staffing teams. I am incredibly proud of the students who have received certificates this half term…

Well done and keep up the hard work next half term everyone!!

Last Friday, Mrs Duffy and Miss Lyon took the year 11 GCSE group to Tameside college where they got to take part in a fine dining experience, and they really enjoyed themselves.

They ordered food and were served by students at the college who were completing qualifications in hospitality. Our GCSE students got the opportunity to see how food is presented and gave them some inspiration for when they do their GCSE practical and how they can garnish their dishes.

After our meal we were invited to go into the kitchen and see an industrial, catering kitchen and we had an amazing opportunity to meet the chef. Our students were very impressed and the chef Ray invited our students to come back and cook in his kitchen which we are in the process of arranging now!

For outdoor education on Thursday, Miss Oakley’s class had a special treat organised for them to visit Manchester City Sensory Room.

Mrs Bennett drove them to Etihad Stadium where they were met by PK who guided them to the entrance to Colin Bell Reception.  Due to building work being carried out creating the new stand the children walked around the stadium and had the opportunity to look at the pitch before getting the elevator to go up to the sensory room.

The children walked passed Haaland and Grealish’s executive suites before being taken to the sensory room. They took off their coats and shoes and enjoyed the interactive floor which had a vast menu of interactive activities. A firm favourite was 'sweets' where the children had to walk or roll around to move the sweets to reveal a hidden picture underneath. The children also had lots of fun with the bubble tube, strobe lighting, massager, infinity tube and interactive light wall. There was also a relaxation room where they could chillout on beanbags and look out over the stadium.

PK gave each child a signed picture of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden. The children had the most amazing afternoon and would like to thank PK for organising this special event for them.

Let’s see what some of the classes have been doing starting with Mrs Sutcliffe’s class…

"The last week of school this half term, and wow what a week it has been! Two of our class caterpillars have shed their skins and are looking very hairy now. We have loved watching them and collecting some fresh leaves on our outdoor education sessions.

We have been enjoying all things Halloween this week, using our sense of sight to explore some witchy potions in science, using our rhyming skills to make up spells in phonics and we have been making bubbling cauldrons in art.

The children have all worked really hard over the half term and we have been so impressed with how settled they are in our class routines. They have all loved learning the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and know the story so well. Some of the children have been re-inventing the story so that Goldilocks has been eating pancakes instead of porridge! We will be moving on to The Three Little Pigs after the holidays.

In our maths work we have been learning all about place value and understanding the numbers to 10 really well. This week we have looked at part-part whole models and making amounts in different ways.

We became super geography explorers last week and used maps to find different features of the school grounds. This week we have been designing our ideal playgrounds, and there have been lots of amazing ideas! We have had a fabulous start to year 1 and are all really looking forward to all amazing learning next term has to offer. "

Now to Miss Boothroyd and Miss McDonald’s class…

"The children have had a wonderful first half term settling into year 7!

This term the children have been exploring suspense stories in English and have written some amazing scary stories. They also created book covers for their story and even converted them into a comic strip!

They have been exploring algebra in Maths and are making excellent progress with their learning. The children have enjoyed science this term and have become creative and designed and made solar houses and windmills during our lessons exploring renewable energy.

In history this term the children have designed and made Roman helmets and shields – this really inspired their learning, and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

The children have established positive relationships with their peers and new teachers and are doing amazing! Well done, keep it up! Miss McDonald, Miss Rahman, Miss Khan and Mrs Hand are so proud of you, as will Miss Boothroyd be on her return next half term! "

Don’t forget school reopens on Monday 4th November and that week we have our sponsored walk with Primary on Wednesday and Secondary on Thursday.

Thank you to our companies that have already sponsored us and helped raised £750. All children and young people should have received their sponsor forms already and I have been overwhelmed with some of the totals so far, Ethan from Mrs Davies class in primary had raised a massive £950 and Lewis from Mrs Whalley’s form in secondary has raised an impressive £100. The money raised will help towards buying a new school bus to help deliver our outdoor education lessons throughout the school. Outdoor Education plays a key role in our school curriculum offer and has such a positive impact on our amazing students and families. At the moment, all of our students currently access Outdoor Education once a week, but to sustain this, we need a new bus. Please, please help us to achieve our goal so we can continue to make an ‘outstanding’ difference to our students lives.

I hope you have a wonderful half term break, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back for the autumn two term.

Mrs Millard
