HWA Blog - 24.5.24

As we finish for the first summer term, I would like to share with you the children and young people who received a Head Teacher’s Award for this half term. Well done to you all and keep up the hard work…

Headteacher's Awards - 24.5.24

This week, our KS4 students continued to do us proud and have worked hard as they approached their GCSE English Literature, Physics Paper 1 and iGCSE English Language. I hope the May half term provides our KS4 students with some rest, relaxation and recuperation as they go again as we return on Monday 3rd June for their GCSE Maths Paper 2 exam.

The celebratory ice cream van was a big success with all the children, young people and staff for their outstanding contributions to our recent Ofsted report. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to celebrate our outstanding report and end of term. However, we were upset that the sunshine did not make an appearance this morning, but we still enjoyed these outside together.

Over the last few weeks, we have been recruiting some teaching posts and what a great field we had to pick from. We have recruited two maternity post as Miss Bramley is expecting her third baby and Mrs Jones is expecting her second baby, both are due in August. We have recruited Mrs Sutcliffe to take on Miss Bramley’s maternity post and Mrs Smith to take on Mrs Jones’ maths nurture post. I am thrilled to state that both Mrs Sutcliffe and Mrs Smith bring a range of experience and skillsets but we also wish Miss Bramley and Mrs Jones all the best as they count down the weeks until their babies arrives and they are both blooming.

Mrs Tushingham and Mrs Needham are also working hard to finalise the timetables for next academic year and we are finalising the new class list and assigning primary teaching staff to these classes, secondary form tutors will predominantly stay the same next year. Once we have completed this, we will inform families of new primary class teachers ready for the transition days next term.

Let’s see what some of the classes have been doing starting with Miss Tootill’s year 6 class…

"Just like that, our Year 6 journey is coming to end what fabulous memories we’ve made, even when you’re driving us round the bend! From giggles, to laughter and learning for all, you’ve all shot up and grown to be so tall!

What a year it’s been for you, my lovely, little crew! We had plans and intentions and a lot of things to do. From learning about areas like algebra and SPaG, to using the subjunctive mood – we had that in the bag! Yet, as you’ll often find in life, we were put to the test… but not the normal SATs-y kind – a weird, abnormal quest.

It’s been so hard – we know that. We’re proud of what you’ve shown when facing such adversity unlike we’ve ever known.

Remember cheers on Sports Days and trips to near and far. Remember class assemblies and learning the guitar. Remember all our playtimes and running on the grass. But, most of all, remember how you’re valued in this class.

As we look back in the future, we’ll think of you and smile; the kids who showed resilience and went the extra mile. So, though it’s time to say goodbye, just know it’s not the end. We’ll live on in your memories as special year six friends.

Thank you for an unbelievable year and for being part of our Hollinwood Academy Journey. We wish you all the best in your next adventure and journey into Secondary. Have a wonderful Summer, be safe and thank you for being OUTSTANDING!"

Now to Mrs Nuttall’s form…

"We have had a fantastic week in 10NNL and have been so impressed with how hard they have all been working, and how they have coped with all the changes to lessons with the exams going on. Some students have even been doing mocks and revising for our own exams, which is going great so far. The students were treated to ice creams this afternoon as a reward for all their hard work (but they ate them so quickly before we could pictures, so have one of myself and Miss Lyon’s instead!!). Now we’ll hand over to the students so they can tell you all about their week!"

“This week in Geography, our class have been looking at global resource management and energy consumption, discussing how our natural resources are used to provide functions for populations globally, alongside how man-made vehicles use energy and thus release greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."

-Mathew

“ In English we did creative writing and non fiction writing, I preferred creative writing as it gave me more creative freedom. With creative writing we wrote pertaining to an image given to us, in which I chose a bridge leading to a city”

-Jacob

“This week in Art we have been looking at a range of artists and I have been focusing on the work of Nancy Stanlee. I decided to do a collage of a high heel and got my inspiration from my own high heels. I really enjoyed this project because it was fun to bring what I love from home and incorporate that into my art project at school.”

-Ellie

“During Duke of Edinburgh we have been walking around Alexandra Park and also Castleshaw to look at the accommodation that we are going to be staying in during our expedition. We walked down to the accommodation, and went in groups to look at the rooms we will be staying in. We also saw some goats on our way! I really enjoyed looking around and the accommodation was far better than I expected. I’m really excited for our residential next month”

-Freya

“This week in Science we have been doing our mocks (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). This shows us our progress and things that we need to work on. We also did a lesson today about energy transfer in which we made catapults and tested their effectiveness (unfortunately Louis, Mathew and Miss Nasim beat my team in the competition).

-Emily

“This week in Maths we have been working on ratio, percentage and fraction problems. I really enjoyed this topic because I use this maths in real life.”

-Louis

"Hope you have a lovely restful half term!"

Now to Miss Datta’s form…

"We are now in full exam mode!

This year has gone by so fast and what a fantastic form to spend it with!

We are going to miss you dearly 11SUA!

Here is how we say our final goodbyes to Hollinwood!"

Finlay our philosopher says –

Time is limited, but the moments I had here was worth every second.

I would have said more but the fewer the words, the greater the impact.

Dekon our grateful thinker says –

Joining Hollinwood Academy on 4th September 2019 gave me the best 4 over years of my life.

Despite having 6 months of Covid, it was a struggle for me, but I’ve got used to it now.

Now that I’m leaving school this year, this is my final goodbye to all the staff, best friends, pastoral staff.

To all the teachers who taught me for the past years, I will miss you and I know you’ll all miss me as well, as I’ve brought joy in all your lives. Thank you so much for the time I’ve enjoyed here.

To all the best friends I’ve made in the time, I’m going to miss the funny jokes made, hanging out most of the time, supporting each other, I am going to enjoy every moment spent with you all.

To all Pastoral Staff, I’m going to miss all the support you gave me when I was down, making me laugh and smile when I’m upset. I’m going to miss talking about how I’m feeling about stuff that’s made me feel negative emotions and turn it positive.

It’s going to be an upsetting experience leaving this school, but I’ll do my very best to remember all the memories made here.

Goodbye everyone. I am going to miss you all.

Robin the emotional says – almost made us cry

It feels incredibly strange writing this because how does one summarise five years of their life, well this is my attempt to do so:

I am filled with a certain amount of dread and fear but

In the back of my mind, I have a strange sense of relief

I’ve been here awhile and have a lot of experiences but despite this I feel endlessly grateful that I’ve had the chance to meet the people I’ve met.

Oliver the collected and cool says –

My time here has been an emotional roller-coaster and I wouldn’t ride it again, but nonetheless, I have made many friends throughout the nearly 5 years that I have been here, and I’ve met some interesting people… I will never exactly forget my time here and even if I tried, how could I? KEITH KEITH KEITH!!!

Maia the go-to person for our every problem says –

It was nice meeting you all.

I will also miss you and wish you all the best of luck. Goodbye.

Matthew the timekeeper of our class says –

I will miss the teachers at this school the people who have taught me so many new things that I have used during important parts in my life. It helped me grow as a person and become more responsible for the actions and things I do in life. They have also helped me do new things to make myself smarter as a person.

THANK YOU:

Miss Potts for teaching maths lessons that can be challenging but easy when you get used to it.

Miss Nuttall for teaching English lessons that I could never have known of.

Miss Boutell for teaching fun and exciting science lessons.

Miss Wallace for helping me when I needed help and making me laugh a lot.

Miss Datta for being kind and caring to all around here.

Mr Akhtar for teaching ICT lessons that can be both interesting and challenging.

I hope when I’m in college I can become better at things and become someone smarter and more responsible.

James the obliged says –

Thank you, Mr. Page, Miss Nuttall, Miss Wallace, Miss Smith, Miss Gold, Miss Gibson, Mr. Valentine, Miss Bones and Mr. Gold for being amazingly supportive of my progress up to today. Now getting ready to do my GCSE’s, I will be eternally grateful.
