HWA Blog - 12.7.24

This week has been jam-packed with exciting events and achievements at Hollinwood Academy. Firstly, I must celebrate the super SATs results received by our Year 6 students. We are extremely proud of their hard work and dedication that enabled them to excel in these assessments.

On Monday and Tuesday Mr Heap, Miss Callaghan, Mr Ottoway and Mr Leeson supported some of our year 10 students on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh overnight expedition to Castleshaw. Once they arrived there on Monday morning, they had a great day exploring and hiking almost 13 miles around Castleshaw and its surroundings. They all had a good night’s sleep (once they got to sleep) and they were up, dressed, breakfast had and ready to go again for another day of map reading, hiking and orienteering.

Next week, Mr Heap, Mrs Bennett, Mr Ottoway and Mr Leeson will be taking a number of year 11 students on their Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh overnight expedition to Hardhurst Farm. We have five students taking part in the silver expedition Monday to Wednesday and then a further four students continuing to finish their Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition all day Wednesday and Thursday. What an achievement this is for our students, we are extremely proud of your hard work, resilience and dedication.

On Wednesday, we held our secondary rewards trip to Ashton Cineworld: cinema, food and bowling. The students and staff had a fantastic time watching Inside Out 2 and bowling against their friends. It was such a privilege to see our students enjoying themselves and also seeing their exemplary behaviour whilst representing their school! Well done everyone!

Reward Trip

Our Year 6 students had a fantastic end of year celebration as they embarked on a residential trip to Gulliver's World. We were delighted to see the children enjoying themselves and having a wonderful time at the theme park. It has truly been a memorable experience for all involved.

Now to Miss Waterman’s form…

"This term in CWN we have been focusing on accessing the wider community as we continue to grow into adulthood! The students have loved being ‘out and about’ visiting places of familiarity and new places to explore!

As the final academic year draws to an end, as a team in CWN, we are more than confident that our wonderful students are ready to progress onto their next steps! We’ve spent the past two years working hard and building portfolios for our qualification submissions this term and as a class we could not be prouder of the hard work they have put into it. They have completed qualifications in Engaging in Team Activities, Going on a Prepared Visit, Preparing Drinks and Snacks and Taking Part in a Creative Activity; all under the Pre-Vocational Study Entry Level 1 with Pearsons BTEC.

Mariam’s been our real-life Disney Princess over the last 2 years, singing and dancing the days away, making wonderful memories! We especially have great memories of our time shared in Disneyland Paris and we are so pleased to have been able to share this experience with her! Her infectious smile, kind nature and hard working attitude will truly be missed by all that had the pleasure of working alongside her over her final years here.

We’ve encouraged Katie to try new things, take part in activities she may enjoy and continued to explore the wider community – Katie may not have enjoyed all of these opportunities but has made her own decisions along the way and we will continue to encourage choice and independence. Katie’s infectious bundle of energy and giggles will be truly missed throughout Hollinwood Academy but especially within our class.

Aiden has been developing his independence, progressing his academic skills and growing into a humorous, caring and kind young man. This final term we’re working on his transitions and preparation to his destination further Hollinwood Academy. We’ve encouraged Aiden to try new things, take part in activities he usually wouldn’t and continued to explore the wider community – all these aspects have helped Aiden with the skills needed for what comes next. Aiden has shown determination during lessons and has especially taken to Trampolining in PE with Mr Leeson.

It is with such great sadness that we say goodbye to our class but as they leave, we feel an immense feeling of pride as teaching staff. So a HUGE good luck to Mariam, Katie and Aiden, we can’t wait to hear about your next achievements. "

Now to Mr Gold’s science lessons…

"This half terms topic for the year 7’s has been about energy. They have been learning about different forms of energy and how it can be transferred from one form to another. They have also been learning about renewable and non-renewable forms of energy, how to calculate the cost of energy and ways of saving energy in the home.

Year 8 have been learning about Forces. They have had the opportunity to explore air resistance, friction and streamlining through practical investigations which they have all enjoyed.

The year 9 topics this half term has been waves. This topic has included sound waves, light waves and electromagnetic waves. They have been able to discover the laws of reflection and refraction through practical investigation.

The year 10’s have been working hard and completed a topic on chemical change and electrolysis and are coming to the end of a topic on radioactivity. They have been using skittles to model and help them understand the Half-Life of radioactive materials. "
